Elan: A Rarity

Elan: A Rarity

From a Trans Am Trunk to a Miami Fashion Institution

If you've ever slipped into a breezy cover-up at the beach or reached for that perfectly relaxed maxi dress that somehow works at brunch and dinner, there's a good chance Elan had something to do with it. For more than three decades, this Miami-born brand has been quietly dressing women who value effortless style, quality craftsmanship, and clothing that actually fits real life. Here at San Martini, we believe in curating a closet filled with pieces that tell a story and few brands have a story quite like Elan's. From 150 handmade dresses stuffed into the trunk of a Trans Am to one of the last vertically integrated fashion houses in Miami, Elan's journey is a masterclass in grit, family, and timeless style.

A Twenty-Year-Old, a Trans Am, & 150 Dresses

Every great brand has an origin story, but Elan's reads more like a coming-of-age film set against the neon glow of early-1990s Miami. Elan Savir, an Israeli-born entrepreneur raised in New York and South Florida, was just eighteen when he started working in clothing stores. The late 1980s Miami fashion scene was booming, fabric mills hummed, factories churned, and everyone Savir admired seemed to be in the garment business. "To me, success equaled a clothing company," Savir has recalled. "I always had a good eye, and I wanted to make something out of myself."

Inspired by his future father-in-law, who operated a string of successful boutiques in Hollywood Beach creating clothing and bathing suits, Savir began thrifting for used jeans and fabrics, cutting and stitching them into edgy denim creations and club dresses out of his garage. At twenty-one, he borrowed money from his parents, produced 150 dresses, loaded them into the trunk of his Trans Am, and drove up and down the Florida coast selling door-to-door to beach shops and boutiques. "Everyone thought I knew what I was doing," Savir laughed in an interview with South Florida Business & Wealth. "No one realized that I was actually just starting out."

He formally launched the Elan brand at Surf Expo in Orlando in 1991 and he's been returning to that same trade show ever since. What began as a scrappy resort wear operation run on instinct and hustle has evolved into a contemporary fashion powerhouse with over 2,000 retail accounts, five seasonal collections, and a presence in some of America's most respected department stores.

Why Elan Stands Apart in Contemporary Fashion

In an era when most fashion brands outsource everything, by designing in one country, cut in another, sew in a third, and sold in a fourth, Elan does something almost unheard of in modern times. The company designs, cuts, and sews under one roof at its Miami headquarters, employing more than 150 people. This makes Elan one of the last remaining vertically integrated fashion manufacturers in the city, a distinction that carries real meaning for anyone who cares about where their clothes come from and how they're made.

Fifty percent of everything Elan produces is made right here in the USA, in their Miami facility. That's not a marketing slogan, it's a daily reality on the factory floor. For San Martini customers who prioritize American-made quality and want to support domestic craftsmanship, this is a powerful differentiator. When you pick up an Elan piece, you're holding something that was likely touched by hands in the same building where it was dreamed up on a mood board.

The brand's pricing reflects its commitment to accessible luxury. With most pieces falling in the $62 to $138 range, Elan occupies a sweet spot in the contemporary fashion market; elevated enough to feel special, approachable enough to build a real wardrobe around. This is clothing designed for the woman who wants to look put-together without overthinking it, who values comfort as much as style, and who understands that the best fashion investments are the ones you actually wear.

Three Generations of Family-Run Craftsmanship

One of the most remarkable things about Elan is that it remains, at its heart, a family affair. Elan Savir still leads the company as founder and lead designer. His wife, Galit Savir, stepped into a design role over a decade ago, and the couple remains deeply hands-on with every collection. "We are involved in every item and fitting," Savir has said. "Everything that comes out in our collections has been through us."

Their three daughters, Leah, Sarah, and Senaya, represent the next generation, bringing fresh energy particularly to the brand's growing e-commerce and digital presence. "My daughters are heavily involved with that side of the business, bringing a new energy that we haven't had before," Savir told Lifestyle Media Group. Full-time designer John Schumann rounds out the creative team, but the family's fingerprints are on everything.

This multigenerational commitment shows in the product. There's a consistency and care to Elan's collections that mass-produced fast fashion simply cannot replicate. When a family stakes its name and reputation on every garment (literally, in this case, since the brand carries the founder's first name), the standards stay high. For those of us building a curated closet of pieces we'll reach for again and again, that kind of personal accountability matters.

Five Collections that Cover Every Season & Occasion

Elan produces five distinct collections each year: Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter, and Resort. That resort collection holds a special place in the brand's DNA, as it's where Savir started, and it remains what the brand is most celebrated for. "My favorite will always be resort," he said. "It's where I started, and what we're most known for."

But the brand's evolution beyond resort wear is equally impressive. Around 2009, Elan began its transition into full ready-to-wear, starting with a fall line. "It was probably the best move we could have made," Savir explained, "since it opened up a world of new doors for us and those same doors expanded our summer business as well." Today, the collections span everything from crochet cover-ups and flowing maxi dresses to chunky cable-knit sweaters, luxe denim, faux leather pieces, matching sets, and shackets. Our personal favorite and best seller being the Aspen Coat, found on our site here.

The design aesthetic draws heavily from European travel; recent collections have been inspired by the blue-and-white palette of Santorini, with lookbook shoots in Tulum, Mexico and Portofino, Italy. The result is a bohemian, casual-chic sensibility with an international edge. Elan describes its target customer as "the active woman on the go with a sense of style who appreciates value without compromising quality." If that sounds like the kind of personal style you're building toward, you're in the right place and in the right hands with Elan.

What makes Elan's range particularly valuable for developing your own timeless style is its versatility. As Savir puts it: "We want to make casual, comfortable, and chic clothing that women can wear to run their every day errands, but that they can also wear to a nice dinner." That dual-purpose design philosophy is exactly what a well-edited wardrobe demands; fewer pieces that work harder.

From Beach Boutiques to Nordstrom & Bloomingdale's

The growth from a Trans Am trunk to major wholesaler is one of the most compelling arcs in Miami fashion. Today, Elan is carried by Nordstrom, Bloomingdale's, Dillard's, and Everything But Water, among hundreds of independent boutiques across the United States and Canada. The brand maintains more than 2,000 retail accounts; a testament to the trust that buyers place in Elan's consistent quality, on-trend design, and reliable delivery.

At Bloomingdale's, Elan's crochet maxi dresses and swim cover-ups have earned strong customer reviews. Nordstrom features the brand prominently in its contemporary women's clothing section. Everything But Water, one of the country's premier resort wear destinations, carries nearly fifty Elan styles at any given time. These aren't vanity placements, they represent deep, ongoing partnerships built over years of proven sell-through performance.

The brand also invests in the wholesale relationships that sustain independent retailers. Elan exhibits regularly at Surf Expo in Orlando, MAGIC in Las Vegas, and Atlanta Market, connecting directly with the boutique owners who have been the brand's backbone since day one. That loyalty to the independent retail community is something we appreciate deeply at San Martini, where curating meaningful brand partnerships is central to everything we do.

Elan's Response to Challenge Reveals Its Character

When COVID-19 shuttered businesses across the country in 2020, Elan's vertically integrated manufacturing model proved to be more than a business advantage, it became a community lifeline. The company converted its Miami factory to produce protective masks, ultimately donating more than 40,000 masks to Memorial Healthcare System. While many brands scrambled to find overseas production, Elan simply pivoted its existing facility to meet the moment.

The pandemic also accelerated a long-planned move into direct-to-consumer e-commerce. Savir allocated $500,000 to build out the brand's online presence through shopelan.com, and the investment paid off quickly. "The e-commerce store does more by 8 o'clock in the morning than the store does all day," he told Surf Expo in 2023. The brand has also embraced open sizing in recent collections, reflecting a commitment to inclusivity that aligns with how modern women actually shop.

Why San Martini is Proud to Carry Elan

At San Martini, we're intentional about every brand we bring into our collection. We look for partners who share our values: quality over quantity, craftsmanship over shortcuts, and a genuine commitment to helping our customers express their personal style with confidence. Elan checks every one of those boxes.

Their American-made production, family-run heritage, and over thirty-three years of continuous operation speak to a level of dedication that's increasingly rare in contemporary fashion. When we recommend an Elan piece to a San Martini customer, we're not just suggesting a pretty dress, jacket, or trouser; we're introducing you to a brand with deep roots, real people behind every stitch, and a design philosophy that prioritizes how clothing makes you feel, not just how it looks on a hanger.

Whether you're building a resort wear capsule for your next getaway, looking for that perfect transitional sweater that bridges summer into fall, or simply want to add a few effortlessly chic pieces to your curated closet, Elan delivers. Their mid-range contemporary pricing means you can invest in multiple pieces without the guilt, and their five-season collection cycle means there's always something new to discover.

"We don't just make clothes and sell them," Savir has said. "We want to build our brand and our image because people want to buy a lifestyle; they're not just buying the actual clothes." At San Martini, we couldn't agree more. Great fashion tells a story, and Elan's story of ambition, family, Miami craftsmanship, and timeless style, is one we're honored to share with you.
